Alongside the turquoise, jasper and orphan crystals in my artworks, you might also find a rarish substance I call 'Carrierine'.* Because what some see as valuable, others see as plunder of the earth's resources. One person's landfill is another one's treasure. So I like to mix it up. The old, the new, the used, the precious. My art incorporates items that have material, sentimental, personal, historical, ecological value. Materials that are due to be discarded, or that have once been something else. Jewels, photos, vintage beads and textiles share structure with bags, bottles, drinks cans, rags, paper, salvaged metals and oddments. Such things have a history; a starting point from which the new piece evolves. There is also an element of rescue; it seems a shame to discard something that was useful once, if it can be recycled. Thirdly, there is the idea of transformation - something old becoming something new again. So each piece is individual with a unique past, present and future story of its own. *Carrierine: that's a tongue in cheek term I invented for the hardened, multi-coloured substance that results from the alchemy of fused plastic carrier bags. |
